Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis Lab
SEKALA has established a GIS lab, which is equipped with state of the art equipment (including a plotter, GIS software and work stations), qualified GIS technicians and a vast database of spatial dta. The lab provides high and low resolution satellite imagery for the Indonesian archipelago, and offers a suite of image processing and printing services.
SEKALA's GIS technicians are currently working with the Ministry of Forestry to collect, improve and archive data on the legal boundaries and licenses of large-scale concessions, industrial timber plantations, and large-scale agricultural plantations. The are also undertaking GIS analysis which will be used to calculate carbon emissions resulting from land clearing, deforestation and forest degradation.
SEKALA is able to source, provide, enhance, rectify and process affordable, accurate and up-to-date low to high resolution satellite imagery.
Accuracy is improved through a range of image processing services including:
- Georectification (Rectification and Orthorectification)—to remove image distortions caused by topographical variations in the surface of the earth and the tilt of the satellite or aerial sensor. This is especially needed for flat or low elevation areas (rectification); or for hilly or mountainous areas with high elevation (orthorectification). The process enables direct and accurate measurements of distances, angles, positions and areas.
- Mosaicing/Data fusion—to join satellite images with different dates or angles. This can be used to produce cloud free maps.
- Image Enhancement—to improve the visual interpretability of an image. This allows users to extract the most information possible from aerial photography and satellite imagery.
Accurate satellite imagery can be used to detect:
- Forest cover change
- Coral reef change
- Erosion and land changes
- Suitable areas for agricultural crops, such as oil palm
- Illegal logging and forest conversion
- Forest fires
- High conservation areas.
Accurate satellite images can also be used to develop comprehensive spatial plans; or to provide a base for community mapping exercises.
SEKALA’s field of expertise include:
- Remote Sensing Image Processing
- Digital Photo-Interpretation
- Digital Mapping
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Surveying
SEKALA can also provide customized, large-scale photographic prints of purchased satellite imagery. For inquiries and questions, please contact info@sekala.net
