Reduced Emissions from Avoided Deforestation and Degradation (REDD)
Indonesiawill host the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 13) in Bali in December 2007. At this important global conference, parties will discuss the option of creating tradable carbon credits for avoiding deforestation. Indonesia will play a leading role in this meeting and will be one of the first countries in the world to trial such an initiative if avoided deforestation is adopted as an option under the Kyoto Protocol.
A number of studies have been commissioned to ready Indonesia for this important conference. These studies ultimately seek to quantify the rate of deforestation in Indonesia, quantify how much carbon is being emitted from deforestation , determine the key drivers of deforestation and identify realistic strategies that can be adopted to avoid deforestation.
Sekala is providing GIS analysis for these studies and providing critical data on deforestation, carbon emissions and the drivers of deforestation (i.e. oil palm).
