Supporting Avoided Deforestation in Papua

Papua contains the largest tract of intact tropical rainforest in the world.  These forests are highly diverse and provide habitats for an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, including a large number of endemic species.

Around 1.8 million people, many of whom are indigenous people with customary rights to land and forest resources, rely on Papua’s forests for their livelihoods.

Papua’s forests are currently threatened by large-scale logging, illegal logging, oil palm expansion and mining.

SEKALA has been helping customary people to map their land and forest resources in a number of areas, including Lorentz National Park and Jayapura District.

It has also helped WWF Indonesia to:

  • Identify major stakeholders wielding influence in the forest sector;
  • Develop community based forest models;
  • Identify High Conservation Value Forests in Merauke.
