Community Mapping, Tenurial Rights and Conflict Resolution in Kalimantan, Indonesia

Customary rights to land and forest resources were swept aside by a series of government policies issued during the Suharto era.  Political change has offered a range of opportunities for customary people to reassert their rights over land and forest resources and legitimate these rights.

Community mapping is a tool that allows customary people to map their land and forest resources in a participatory way.  It can also be used to mediate conflicts between the Indonesian government and customary people and to provide an avenue for both parties to negotiate and agree upon spatial plans and customary boundaries.

SEKALA has provided community mapping support in Kalimantan and Papua for the last 10 years.  It has also helped to improve community mapping methodologies and to support community mapping networks throughout the archipelago.
